5 Mistakes That Are Killing Your Google Rating

Your Google rating isn't low because your service is bad. It's low because happy customers aren't leaving reviews. Here are the five most common reasons — and they're all fixable.

1. You're Only Getting Reviews From Unhappy Customers

This is the most common problem. Happy customers leave quietly. Unhappy customers leave reviews. If you're not actively asking for reviews, your rating will naturally skew negative because the only people motivated enough to review on their own are the ones with a complaint.

The fix: Ask every customer for a review, not just the ones who seem thrilled. The volume of positive reviews will quickly outweigh the occasional negative one.

2. You're Asking at the Wrong Time

Handing someone a card at checkout and saying "leave us a review!" doesn't work. They're busy, they're distracted, and by the time they get home, they've forgotten.

The fix: Send a text 1-2 hours after their visit. The experience is still fresh, they're relaxed, and the link is right there on their phone.

3. You're Making It Too Hard

If your review "process" involves telling customers to Google your business name, find your listing, click reviews, and figure out how to write one — you've already lost them.

The fix: Send a direct link that takes them straight to the review form. One tap, they're there. Remove every unnecessary step.

4. You're Not Being Consistent

Asking for reviews in bursts — once a month when you remember, or only when business is slow — doesn't build momentum. Google's algorithm favors businesses with a steady stream of recent reviews.

The fix: Make review requests part of your daily routine. After every customer interaction, send a text. When it's that simple, consistency is easy.

5. You're Using a Tool That's Too Complicated

If your review tool requires a 30-minute setup, a training session, or more than two clicks to send a request, it won't get used consistently. The best tool is the one that's simple enough to actually use every day.

The fix: Switch to something dead simple. If it takes more than 5 minutes to set up and more than 10 seconds to send a request, it's too complicated.

The Common Thread

Every one of these mistakes comes down to the same thing: friction. The more friction in your review process — for you AND your customers — the fewer reviews you'll get. Strip away the complexity, make it effortless, and the reviews will follow.
